An early morning tour of Taormina, conducted by our local guide Diana (with her British accent), enabled us to see the town devoid of other tourists, traffic, and bustle. In the distance, Mt. Etna smoked gently, readying herself for an eruption no doubt. (Those who slept late missed the spectacle; by mid-morning the crater was enveloped in clouds.) After an afternoon at leisure we reassembled for our final Mythological Story Hour, featuring the tales of Hephaestus and of Odysseus’ encounter with Scylla and Charybdis, an event that was said to have taken place in the strait of Messina, which we could see from our table on the hotel’s patio. A group dinner (of seafood risotto and grilled tuna) concluded our last full day together, which prompted hugs all around.
