In the past, online courses and certificate programs have been seen as a cheaper and faster alternative to degree programs, for students without the time or money for a four-year degree. Recently there has been a shift in opinion. This comes, partially, due to a widening skills gap in our workforce. A recent McKinsey and Company study revealed that, “companies are having a hard time filling job vacancies even though 75 million youth are unemployed. According to 39 percent of companies surveyed, the main reason is “lack of skills.” Although 70 percent of educational institutions believe students are prepared for work, only 42 percent of companies think so.” This skills gap has forced employees and employers to look for creative ways to gain the knowledge and skills to compete at a high level.
One way to fill this need is for those who are currently employed, newly graduated or looking to gain employment, to achieve certifications or “nano degrees” in various fields of study. According to a Monster.com article, “Certain certifications often mean the difference between pulling down a middling salary and making serious dough.”
